Cell Phones and Electronic Devices Guidelines

Cell Phone Disciplinary

Students will not be allowed to use personal communication devices while on campus during the school day. Prohibited devices include:

  • Cell phones
  • Smartwatches
  • Earbuds/headphones
  • Tablets/laptops (unless school-issued and used for instruction)
  • Gaming devices
  • Radios/pagers/other electronic communication devices

The instructional day begins when a student enters the school building and ends at the final dismissal bell. This policy applies in all areas of the campus, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and the cafeteria—during passing periods and lunch.

Students must keep devices out of sight, turned off or in silent mode, and unused at all times during the school day. Devices may be stored in a student’s backpack.

All SJH staff will consistently uphold and enforce this policy. Students who do not comply will receive consequences in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

First Offense

  • Action: The device is confiscated.
  • Referral: A disciplinary referral is filed.
  • Contact: The school will contact the parent or guardian.
  • Return: The device is returned to the student at the end of the day.

Second Offense

  • Action: The device is confiscated.
  • Referral: A disciplinary referral is filed.
  • Consequence: The student receives detention or Saturday School.
  • Contact: The school will contact the parent or guardian.
  • Return: The device is returned only to a parent or guardian.

Third Offense

  • Action: The device is confiscated.
  • Referral: A disciplinary referral is filed.
  • Consequence: The student receives a one-day In-School Suspension (ISS).
  • Contact: The school will contact the parent or guardian.
  • Return: The device is returned only to a parent or guardian.

Repeated Violations

Continued violations trigger progressive disciplinary action. The school will address repeated offenses as insubordination. These actions follow the guidelines in the Student Code of Conduct.

Refusal to Comply

Students must surrender their device when a staff member requests it. Refusing to turn over a device constitutes insubordination. The school will address this under the Student Code of Conduct, which may lead to additional disciplinary consequences.
